In the paper under review, the authors study complex surface singularities admitting a contracting automorphism. Let \((Y,o)\) be a normal complex surface singularity. Then \((Y,o)\) is weighted homogeneous if and only if it admits a good \(\mathbb C^*\)-action. In this case, the automorphism \(f_t\) corresponding to \(t\in \mathbb C^*\) with \(|t|<1\) is a typical example of a contracting automorphism. The authors prove that if \((Y,o)\) admits a contracting automorphism \(f\), then \((Y,o)\) is weighted homogeneous and when \((Y,o)\) is not a cyclic quotient singularity \(f^n=f_t\) holds for some integer \(n>0\) and some \(t\in \mathbb C^*\) with \(|t|<1\). In any case, they classify the contracting automorphisms. The authors also provide a complete classification of the orbit space \(S(f):=(Y\setminus\{o\})/f\), which is a non-Kähler compact complex surface with Kodaira dimension \(\leq 1\).
