This paper studies the properties of the space of positive operators and the space of compact positive operators between Banach lattices. Let \(E\) be an atomic Banach lattice and \(F\) be a Banach lattice. Let \(L^r(E,F)\) and \(K^r(E,F)\) be a space of regular operators and a space of compact regular operators, respectively. It is proved that the following statements are equivalent: (i) \(L^r(E,F)\) contains no copy of \(\ell_\infty\), (ii) \(L^r(E,F)\) contains no copy of \(c_0\), (iii) \(K^r(E,F)\) contains no copy of \(c_0\), (iv) \(K^r(E,F)\) is a (projection) band in \(L^r(E,F)\), (v) \(K^r(E,F) = L^r(E,F)\). This result is the Banach lattice version of \textit{N. J. Kalton}'s theorem [Math. Ann. 208, 267--278 (1974; Zbl 0266.47038)]. It extends the results of \textit{Q.-Y. Bu} and \textit{N.-C. Wong} [Indag. Math., New Ser. 23, No. 3, 199--213 (2012; Zbl 1262.46050)].
