    Let \(H\) be a real Hilbert space with the norm \(\left\|\cdot \right\|\). A sequence \(x_j\in H\) is said to be generalized hybrid if there exist real numbers \(\alpha, \beta\) such that \[ \alpha \left\| x_{j+1}-x_{k+1} \right\|^2 + (1-\alpha ) \left\| x_j -x_{k+1}\right\|^2 \leq \beta \left\| x_{j+1}-x_{k} \right\|^2 + (1-\beta) \left\| x_{j}-x_{k} \right\|^2 \] for all \(j, k\). The following ergodic theorem is proved: The sequence of means \(s_n =\frac{1}{n}\sum_{j=0}^{n-1}\) is weakly convergent in \(H\) if and only if \(x_j\) is bounded. Two other equivalent conditions are provided. This is applied in order to prove new fixed point results for generalized hybrid self-maps on subsets of \(D\subset H\), i.e., maps \(T:D\to D\) satisfying the condition \[ \alpha \left\| Tx -Ty\right\| ^2 +(1-\alpha )\left\| x -Ty\right\| ^2 \leq \beta \left\| Tx -y\right\| ^2+(1-\beta) \left\| x -y\right\| ^2 \] for all \(x,y\in D\). In the case \(\alpha =1\), \(\beta =0\), one obtains a nonexpansive map. Some examples of such mappings are also given.
