Let \(M\) be a topological space. We say that \(M\) is \textit{weakly locally \(n\)-connected}, or \(\mathrm{WLC}^n\), in \(Y\) if \(M \subset Y\) is closed for every point \(x\in M\) and for each neighborhood \(U_x\) in \(M\), there exists a neighborhood \(V_x\) in \(M\) such that any map from \(S^k\), \(k\leq n\), into \(V_x\) is null-homotopic in \(\tilde{U_x}\), where \(\tilde{U_x}\) is any open set in \(Y\) with \(\tilde{U_x}\cap M=U_x\). If one considers extensions of \(U\) instead, this defines \(M\) to be \textit{approximately locally \(n\)-connected} or \(\mathrm{ALC}^n\). The paper under review proves that if \(M\) is metrizable, then these two notions are the same; that is, under the assumption that \(M\) is metrizable, \(M\) is \(\mathrm{WLC}^n\) if and only if \(\mathrm{ALC}^n\). A spectral characterization of non-metrizable \(\mathrm{ALC}^n\)-compacta and cell-like compacta is given.
