Let \(\varepsilon \geq 0\) and \(X\) and \(Y\) be a Banach spaces. Recall Figiel's theorem that every isometry \(f\) from \(X\) into \(Y\) such that \(f(0)=0\) (i.e., \(f\) is standard) admits a linear left inverse of norm \(1\). Recall also the theorem of \textit{M. Omladič} and \textit{P. Šemrl} [Math. Ann. 303, No.~4, 617--628 (1995; Zbl 0836.46014)] which states that for every surjective standard \(\varepsilon\)-isometry \(f\) from \(X\) into \(Y\) there exists a surjective linear isometry \(U: X \to Y\) such that \(\|f(x) - U(x)\| \leq 2\varepsilon\) for all \(x \in X\) and that this inequality is sharp. The main result of the paper under review (Theorem~2.3) reads as follows: Let \(\varepsilon \geq 0\) and \(f: X \to Y\) be a standard \(\varepsilon\)-isometry. Then for every \(x^* \in X^*\) there exists \(y^* \in Y^*\) with \(\|x^*\| = \|y^*\| = r\) such that \(|x^*(x) - y^*(f(x))| \leq 2\varepsilon r\) for all \(x \in X\). The authors prove, among other things, that this result extends Figiel's theorem and that, under the assumption that the closed convex hull of \(f(X) \cup -f(X)\) is \(Y\), it is equivalent to the existence of a linear operator \(T:Y\to X\) of norm 1 such that \(\|Tf(x) - x\| \leq 2\varepsilon\) for all \(x \in X\). When the \(\varepsilon\)-isometry in Theorem~2.3 is surjective it is proved that the theorem is equivalent to that of Omladič and Šemrl [loc.\,cit.].
