This paper focuses on an adaptive mixed finite element method for a convection-diffusion-reaction equation and the application of a posteriori error estimate for adaptivity. The convergence of the proposed adaptive algorithm is proven for the cases where convection or reaction is not present in convection- or reaction-dominated problems. A novel technique of analysis is based on the superconvergence of the scalar displacement variable. It is shown that the adaptive mixed finite element method is a contraction of the error plus some quantity. Numerical experiments are shown confirming the presented theoretical results.
