In this paper, after recalling several results on best approximations in general real normed linear spaces, the authors establish characterizations of best approximations by elements from convex sets and convex cones in \(L_{p}\) spaces for \(1\leq p<\infty\). The convex cones considered are those of nonnegative functions in \(L_{p}(T,\mu)\) and of increasing functions from \(L_{p}(I,\mu),\) where \(I=[a,b]\subset\mathbb{R}\).
