The authors consider the abstract Cauchy problem of the form \[ (ACP) \quad\begin{cases} u ' (t ) = Au(t ) \text{ for } t \geq 0,\\ u(0) = u_0 ,\end{cases} \] where \(u :[0, \infty) \to X\) is a vector valued function, \(A : D( A) \to X ( D( A) \subset X )\) is a linear operator and \(X\) is a locally convex space. The authors assume that from the properties of \(A\) the existence of a strongly continuous semigroup of operators \(\{T (t ); t \geq 0\}\) on \(X\) can be deduced such that the classical solutions of (ACP) are given by the trajectories \(u = T (.)u_0\) for \(u_0 \in D( A)\). The asymptotic behaviour of the solution is studied. It is shown that, unlike in a Banach space, in a locally convex space convergence to zero faster than any polynomial can be obtained, but not exponentially fast. Various types of stability properties, e.g., exponential, polynomial, uniform, strong stability are studied in adequate locally convex spaces. More precisely, several stability results and characterizations are given in barrelled, Mackey complete, Baire and Montel spaces. Examples of shift and multiplication semigroups are considered. Remarks on barreledness vs. continuity, on Mackey completeness and exponential boundedness are given. Moreover, applications to evolution equations for the transport equation on the Schwartz space, as well as for the heat equation on the Schwartz space and on the Miyadera's space are presented.
