The paper offers a new non-linear method that avoids the Gibbs phenomenon for the image compression. It uses a multiresolution scheme of the type used as a basis for most wavelet and pre-wavelet constructions. The non-linear method is a subdivision type method shown to converge and -- very importantly -- to be a numerically stable multiresolution algorithm (this includes an approximation to the stability constant). Numerical examples are offered too at the end of the article.
