The authors consider the second-order differential equation \[ \ddot{u}-L(t)u+\nabla W(t,u)=0 \leqno(1) \] where \(W\in C^{1}(\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^{N},\mathbb{R})\) and \(L\in C(\mathbb{R},\mathbb{R}^{N\times N})\) is a symmetric matrix-valued function. By using variational methods and critical point theory, they prove the existence of at least one or infinitely many homoclinic solutions of \((1)\) when the potential \(W(t,x)\) satisfies some suitable subquadratic conditions at infinity with respect to the second variable and \(L(t)\) satisfies the condition \[ \liminf_{\left|t\right|\longrightarrow\infty}[\left|t\right|^{\nu-2}\inf_{\left|x\right|=1}(L(t)x,x)]>0 \] for some constant \(\nu<2\).
