The authors study the Cauchy problem for a four-component Novikov system. This system has explicit solutions (peakons) which can be interpreted as approximations to the extreme solutions of equations for water waves propagating over a flat bed. The results include local-in-time well-posedness in Besov spaces and criteria for blow-up of solutions.
