Smooth projective varieties \(X\) containing a \(\mathbb{P}^d\)-bundle (analytic topology) as an ample divisor are very special and conjecturally classified (by Sommese, see Conjecture 1 in the paper under review and references therein). This conjecture is known to be true when \(d \geq 2\) (see Theorem 5.5.2 in [\textit{M. C. Beltrametti} and \textit{A. Sommese}, The Adjunction Theory of complex Projective Varieties. Berlin: de Gruyter and Co. (1995; Zbl 0845.14003)]) and when \(d=1\) and the base \(Z\) of the \(\mathbb{P}^d\)-bundle is of dimension smaller than or equal to 2 (see for instance Theorem 7.4 in [\textit{M. C. Beltrametti} and \textit{P. Ionescu}, Contemp. Math. J. 496, 71--110 (2009; Zbl 1188.14032)]). The main result of this paper is double. On one hand the conjecture is proved when the Picard number of \(Z\) is one and, on the other, in general, it is reduced to the following fact (expected to be true as a generalization of \textit{M. Andreatta} and \textit{J. A. Wiśniewski} [Invent. Math. 146, No. 1, 209--217 (2001; Zbl 1081.14060)]): the only smooth projective variety admitting an ample vector bundle \(\mathcal{E}\) and a nonzero homomorphism from \(\mathcal{E}\) to the tangent bundle to \(X\) is \(\mathbb{P}^n\).
