The author obtains the numerical solution of the following nonlinear two-point boundary value problem (BVP) for ordinary differential equations (ODEs): \[ \varepsilon\,y''(x) = b(x,y), \quad x \in (0,1)\;y(0) = A, \quad y(1) = B. \] In general, the solution of the above BVP exhibits twin boundary layers at both the end points of the domain. Here, it is assumed that the reduced problem (by taking \(\varepsilon = 0\) in the ODE) has a stable solution. To overcome the effect of the boundary layers, piecewise-uniform Shishkin mesh is used to discretize the domain, and classical finite difference methods are used to approximate the derivative. It is shown that suitable transition points for the Shishkin mesh and the error of the numerical method depend on which stability condition the reduced solution satisfies. Also, it is shown that the error may be affected adversely depending on the stability condition satisfied by the reduced solution. Numerical experiments are carried out to validate the theoretical findings.
