The author extends \textit{M. N. Walsh}'s theorem on convergence of nilpotent ergodic averages [Ann. Math. (2) 175, No. 3, 1667--1688 (2012; Zbl 1248.37008)]. Walsh showed convergence in \(\mathrm L^2(X,\mu)\) of averages of the form \[ \frac1{| F_N|}\sum_{n\in F_N}\prod_{i=1}^k (T_1^{p_{1,i}(n)}\cdots T_k^{p_{k,i}(n)})f_i, \] where \(f_i\in \mathrm L^2(X,\mu)\), \(T_i\) are measure-preserving transformations of \((X,\mu)\) contained in a nilpotent group \(\mathcal N\), \((F_N)_{N\in\mathbb N}\) is any Følner sequence in \(\mathbb Z^d\) and \(p_i:\mathbb Z^d\to\mathbb Z\) are polynomial maps. Here the author shows that the same conclusion holds if one replaces \(\mathbb Z^d\) by an arbitrary locally compact amenable group \(\mathcal G\) (the above sum becomes an integral and \(| F_N|\) becomes the Haar measure of \(F_N\)), and the polynomial powers of the \(T_l\) by an appropriate notion of polynomial maps \(T_l:\mathcal G\to\mathcal N\) introduced by \textit{A. Leibman} [Isr. J. Math. 129, 29--60 (2002; Zbl 1007.20035)]. He also shows that the same conclusion holds if one considers \(T_i:\mathcal G\to \mathrm{Aut}(X,\mu)\) of the form \(T_i=\prod_{j=1}^i S_i\), where \(S_j\) are commuting antihomomorphisms, generalizing a result of \textit{V. Bergelson} et al. [Am. J. Math. 119, No. 6, 1173--1211 (1997; Zbl 0886.43002)] which was the case \(k=2\).
