Let \(F\) be any field and \(E/F\) be any extension. In this paper, the author studies the restriction of the Steinberg module \(St(E^n)\) of \(\mathrm{GL}(n,E)\) to \(\mathrm{GL}(n,F)\), and gives a finite increasing filtration of this restriction with some nice properties. Using this fitration, the author determines \(H_*(\Gamma,St(E^n))\) for \(\Gamma\) a subgroup of \(\mathrm{GL}(n,E)\), in two case: (i) \(n=2\), and (ii) \(n=3\) and \(E/F\) a quadratic extension.
