In the papers [J. Number Theory 94, No. 1, 181--212 (2002; Zbl 1006.11026); J. Number Theory 128, No. 8, 2263--2274 (2008; Zbl 1213.11113); Math. Comput. 79, No. 271, 1811--1831 (2010; Zbl 1222.11069); J. Algebra 325, No. 1, 404--415 (2011; Zbl 1261.11043)], the current authors computed the cohomology \(H^5\) with constant coefficients of certain congruence subgroups \(\Gamma\subset \mathrm{SL}_4({\mathbb Z})\), with 5 being chosen as it is the topmost degree that can contain classes of cusp forms. The action of the Hecke algebra was computed and relations with the absolute Galois group of \(\mathbb Q\) were studied. The main technical tool in those computations is the Steinberg module \(\mathrm{St}_n\), as it is the dualizing module for any torsion-free congruence subgroup of \(\mathrm{SL}_n({\mathbb Z})\). In the previous papers, the authors used a variant of a resolution of \(\mathrm{ST}_n\), known as the \textit{sharbly complex}. In the present paper, the authors actually provide a proof that the sharbly complex provides a resolution of \(\mathrm{St}_n\), thus extending the validity of their previous results to more general ground rings.
