In this interesting paper, a wavelet method is constructed for the optimal adaptive solution of stationary partial differential equations (PDEs). The authors show that any well-posed PDE of second order can be reformulated as a well-posed first order least squares system. This system is solved by an adaptive wavelet Galerkin method. The authors develop a new approximate residual evaluation scheme that satisfies the condition for optimal computational complexity, and that is quantitatively much more efficient than the usual APPLY scheme. This theory is applied to semi-linear elliptic PDEs of second order with inhomogeneous boundary conditions and to stationary Navier-Stokes equations.
