A $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex is balanced if its graph is $d$-colorable. The authors prove new lower bounds for the face numbers of balanced triangulations of homology manifolds. One of the results is the following: Let $\Delta$ be an $F$-homology $(d-1)$-manifold without boundary with $d \geq 4$, where $F$ is some field. Then $2h_2(\Delta) - (d-1)h_1(\Delta) \geq 4 \binom d2 (\tilde\beta_1(\Delta) - \tilde\beta_0(\Delta))$. Here $h_i(\Delta) = \sum_{j=0}^i (-1)^{i-j}\binom{d-i}{j-i} f_{j-1}(\Delta)$ is the usual $h$-vector, and $\tilde\beta_i(\Delta)$ is the $i$th reduced Betti number with respect to $F$. For $d \geq 5$ the authors obtain a characterization. The main result of the paper comprises lower bounds for all entries of the $h$-vector, albeit under slightly more technical conditions.
