In this paper, the authors introduce a new class of simplicial complexes, called Buchsbaum\(^*\) complexes, which generalize triangulations of orientable homology manifolds (without boundary) in the same way that doubly-Cohen-Macaulay complexes generalize homology spheres. By definition, a \((d-1)\)-dimensional simplicial complex \(\Delta\) which is Buchsbaum over a field \(k\) is Buchsbaum\(^*\) over \(k\) if \[ \forall p \in | \Delta|,~~\text{dim}_k \widetilde{H}_{d-2}(| \Delta | -p;k)= \text{dim}_k \widetilde{H}_{d-2}(| \Delta |;k) \] The authors give various equivalent formulations of this property and describe the link between this new class of simplicial complexes and well known others classes; in particular, if \(\Delta\) is Cohen-Macaulay (resp. Gorenstein) over a field \(k\), Buchsbaumness\(^*\) property over \(k\) is equivalent to the double Cohen-Macaulayness (resp. Gorensteinness\(^*\)) property over \(k\). They also prove that the triangulation of a homology manifold without boundary is Buchsbaum\(^*\) over \(k\) if, and only if, the manifold is orientable over \(k\) and that every Buchsbaum\(^*\)-complex is doubly Buchsbaum; nonorientable homology manifolds without boundary illustrate the case of doubly Buchsbaum complexes which are not Buchsbaum\(^*\). The authors study the behaviour of the Buchsbaum\(^*\) property for the product and the join of simplicial complexes. They also introduce a notion of higher Buchsbaum\(^*\) connectivity with the class of \(m\)-Buchsbaum complexes for every nonnegative integer \(m\) (giving the class of Buchsbaum complexes for \(m=0\) and the class of Buchsbaum\(^*\) complexes for \(m=1\)) and study the interplay with other similar constructions (\(m\)-Buchsbaumness and \(m\)-Cohen-Macaulayness). Finally, the authors extend results of \textit{G. Kalai} [Invent. Math. 88, 125-151 (1987; Zbl 0624.52004)] and \textit{E. Nevo} [Discrete Comput. Geom. 39, No. 1-3, 411--418 (2008; Zbl 1141.52013)] on the rigidity of graphs by proving that the 1-skeleton of a connected \(d\)-dimensional Buchsbaum\(^*\) complex over a field \(k\) is generically \((d+1)\)-rigid if \(d\geq 2\). They also investigate enumerative properties by studying \(h'\)-numbers of Buchsbaum\(^*\) complexes. Some of their results have been generalized by \textit{J. Browder} and \textit{S. Klee} [Eur. J. Comb. 32, No. 1, 146--153 (2011; Zbl 1206.05106)] to the case of \(m\)-Buchsbaum\(^*\) complexes.
