This work is devoted to an elementary proof of the submultiplicativity of the numerical radius of commuting matrices of order two. With this simple proof the authors easily obtain the known characterization of pairs of matrices which give the equality \(w(AB)=w(A) w(B)\), \(w\) being the numerical radius and \(A,B\) two matrices.
