Let $B^s_{p,q} (\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $F^s_{p,q} (\mathbb{R}^n)$ with $s\in \mathbb{R}$ and $0<p,q \le \infty$ be the well-known function spaces. If $n \ge 2$ and \[ s - \frac{1}{p} > (n-1) \Big( \max \big( \frac{1}{p}, 1 \big) - 1 \Big), \] then it makes sense to ask for traces of these spaces on $\mathbb{R}^{n-1}$, \[ \big( \operatorname{tr} f \big) (x') = f(x', 0), \qquad x' \in \mathbb{R}^{n-1}. \] One has final answers, \[ \operatorname{tr} B^s_{p,q} (\mathbb{R}^n) = B^{s- \frac{1}{p}}_{p,q} (\mathbb{R}^{n-1}), \] \[ \operatorname{tr} F^s_{p,q} (\mathbb{R}^n) = B^{s- \frac{1}{p}}_{p,p} (\mathbb{R}^{n-1}), \qquad p<\infty. \] In addition, there are related linear and bounded extension operators. By standard arguments, one has corresponding assertions for traces on the boundary of bounded smooth domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The usual Fourier-analytical definitions of $B^s_{p,q} (\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $F^s_{p,q} (\mathbb{R}^n)$ are based on the Lebesgue spaces $L_p (\mathbb{R}^n)$, $0<p \le \infty$. Nowadays, there are many modifications of these classical spaces. In the paper under review, the basic spaces $L_p (\mathbb{R}^n)$ are replaced by generalized Morrey spaces quasi-normed by \[ \sup_Q \phi \big( l(Q) \big) \Big( \frac{1}{|Q|} \int_Q |f(y)|^p \, dy \Big)^{1/p} \] for appropriate functions $\phi (t)$, $t>0$, where $Q$ denotes dyadic cubes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with side-length $l(Q)$. If $\phi (t) = t^{n/u}$, $0<p\le u <\infty$, then one has the classical Morrey spaces, generalizing in turn the Lebesgue spaces $L_p (\mathbb{R}^n)$, where $u=p$. It is the main aim of the paper to study the trace problem for these generalized spaces on $\mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ and on the boundaries of smooth domains. For this purpose, the authors deal with the extension problem and study in detail sophisticated lifting and quarkonial decompositions. In addition, related problems for so-called Besov-type spaces $B^{s,\tau}_{p,q} (\mathbb{R}^n)$ are considered.
