Voevodsky's construction of the category of motivic complexes over a field is based on his theory of finite correspondences [\textit{V. Voevodsky} et al., Ann. Math. Stud. 143, 188--238 (2000; Zbl 1019.14009)]). In the paper under review, the authors generalize this construction, as well as its fundamental properties proved by Voevodsky, to correspondences associated to a cohomology theory \(A\) satisfying a number of axioms defined in Section 3. In particular, any cohomology theory represented by an algebra over the spectrum \(MSL\) (Section 3.1) gives an example. The main results give the definition of the category of \(A\)-motives (Definition 10.4.1), which satisfies cancellation (Theorem 9.0.17), strict homotopy invariance (10.2.1), and agrees with the category of modules over the motivic Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum with the exponential characteristic inverted (Theorem 10.4.12). Note that recently the construction is generalized to a base scheme in [\textit{E. Elmanto} et al., J. Topol. 13, No. 2, 460--500 (2020; Zbl 1444.14050)].
