In an ambitious series of papers, the author classifies degenerations and Picard lattices of \(K3\) surfaces \(X\) with finite symplectic automorphism group \(G\) under the following assumption: the Picard lattice \(S\) of the surface \(X\) is negative definite and generated over \(\mathbb{Q}\) by the coinvariant lattice \(S_G\) and the classes of irreducible \((-2)\)-curves. The paper under review settles the case in which \(G\) is isomorphic to the cyclic group \(C_4\) of order \(4\). The main classification is contained in Table 1. The type of a degeneration is given by the incidence graph of the \((-2)\)-curves in \(X\), which is a Dynkin diagram. This data determines the genus of the lattice \(S\). In most cases, marked by \(*\) in Table 1, the genus of \(S\) determines \(S\) up to isomorphism. The lattice \(S\) can be reconstructed from the Niemeier lattices using the data presented in List 1. For some degenerations, marked by ``o'' in Table 1, the maximal group of symplectic automorphisms is actually larger than \(C_4\). These cases are further illustrated in List 2.
