The authors discuss the relationship between the van Diejen's 8-parameter analytic difference operator and the Sakai's 8-parameter elliptic Painlevé difference equation. The main result is that a suitable specialization of a Lax formulation of the latter gives rise to the time-independent Schrödinger equation for the 8-parameter relativistic Calogero-Moser Hamiltonian due to \textit{J. F. van Diejen} [J. Math. Phys. 35, No. 6, 2983--3004 (1994; Zbl 0805.58027)]. This means that a generalized Painlevé-Calogero correspondence at the highest level is established between the Painlevé hierarchy and the rank-1 Calogero-Moser hierarchy. Technically the correspondence is obtained by modifying van Diejen's operator by multiplicative and additive constants so that it may possess as many parameter symmetries as Sakai's elliptic Painlevé equation.
