The notion of conservative algebras was introduced by I. Kantor as a generalization of Jordan algebras to a class of algebras that can be studied using the general Tits-Kantor-Koecher construction. The class of conservative algebras is very large: associative, quasiassociative, Lie, Jordan and Leibniz algebras belong to this class. In the paper under review the author gives a survey of results obtained on conservative algebras. Some structural results are included, as well as facts about the trace function and the construction of a universal conservative algebra.
