Let \(G= \mathrm{GL}_n(F)\) where \(F\) is a nonarchimedean local field, \(K\) a maximal compact subgroup of \(G\), and \(\pi\) a smooth irreducible complex representation of \(G\). Recall that \(\pi\) is generic if \(\Hom_G(\pi, Ind_U^G(\psi))\neq 0\) where \(U\) is a maximal unipotent subgroup of \(G\) and \(\psi\) is a nondegenerate character. In other words, \(\pi\) has a Whittaker model. This article studies a criterion for the genericity of \(\pi\) based on the theory of types. More precisely, suppose that \((J, \lambda)\) is a Bushnell-Kutzko type for the Bernstein component associated to \(\pi\) with \(J\subset K\). The representation \(Ind_J^K (\lambda)\) contains a certain representation \(\sigma_{\text{min}} (\lambda)\) with multiplicity one. The author shows that \(\pi\) is generic if and only if \(\pi|_K\) contains \(\sigma_{\text{min}}(\lambda)\), in which case it occurs with multiplicity one. They also show that this is equivalent to \(\pi|_K\) containing a certain collection of subrepresentations of \(Ind_J^K(\lambda)\) which depends only on \(\pi\); we refer to Theorem 1.1. and Theorem 3.1. in the text for a precise statement. The multiplicity-one statement is obtained by realizing the relevant dimension as an appropriate Kostka number; see Lemmas 2.2. and 2.3. The equivalence with genericity is obtained by via the classification of generic representations in terms of Bernstein-Zelevinsky segments, so that much of the argument can be made combinatorially.
