\textit{O. T. Dasbach} and \textit{X.-S. Lin} [Pac. J. Math. 231, No. 2, 279--291 (2007; Zbl 1166.57002)] proved what was called a ``volumish theorem'' for alternating knots. In this theorem, they provided bounds on the hyperbolic volume of any hyperbolic alternating knot in terms of the sub-extremal coefficients of the Jones polynomial of the given knot. The authors of the present paper prove the analogue for alternating link diagrams on surfaces. In particular, they provide bounds on the hyperbolic volume of an alternating link in a thickened surface in terms of some coefficients of its reduced Jones-Krushkal polynomial.
