In the paper large deviations for \(\beta\)-shifts are studied. A first level large deviation principle is proved. To do this an explicit expression for the main eigenfunction of the corresponding Ruelle operator with respect to a potential is derived and the the natural extension to the bilateral \(\beta\)-shift of the Gibbs state is given. The rate function is attaining its maximum value on the union of the supports of all the maximizing measures with respect to the potential.
