In this work the authors outline three distinct traditions that can be traced in the history of algebraic logic. The first tradition is the Boolean tradition, in which algebra is viewed as the embodiment of logic, rather than a representation of it. In the Logistic tradition, logic is assumed to be embodied in a formal logistic system, and algebra is intended to be only a representation of logic. The third tradition is the model-theoretic tradition. The authors finish their work with a discussion of the contents of each of the papers in this special issue on algebraic logic.
