It is shown that a wear process with a general state space obtained from a fairly general shock model is a strongly IFRA process. The main result generalizes results of \textit{A. W. Marshall} and the reviewer [Ann. Probab. 7, 343-358 (1979; Zbl 0394.62033)] and of \textit{T. H. Savits} and the reviewer [Stochastic Processes Appl. 11, 273-283 (1981; Zbl 0472.62058)]. Some applications to multivariate cumulative shock models, and to shock models with underlying birth process, are given.
