The paper is concerned with properties of generalized polygons introduced by \textit{J. Tits} [Publ. Math. Inst. Haut. Etud. Sci. 2, 13-60 (1959; Zbl 0088.372)] and extended by \textit{W. M. Kantor} [Lect. Notes Math. 1181, 79- 158 (1986; Zbl 0599.51015)]. To quote the authors: ``An elaborate version is given of Kantor's construction of the known generalized hexagons of order \((q,q^ 3)\) and of order \((q,q)\) for \(q\) a power of 2''.
