The theory of bicovariant differential calculi on quantum groups is well developed. In contrast, the theory of covariant differential calculi on quantum homogeneous spaces is still at the very beginning and neither general methods for the construction of such calculi nor general results are known. Covariant differential calculi have been constructed and studied only on simple quantum spaces. The author concerns with the construction of first order differential calculi on subalgebras of a coquasitriangular Hopf algebra \(A\) which are generated by a row of a fixed corepresentation \(u\) of \(A\) or by a row of \(u\) and a row of the contragredient corepresentation \({u^c}\) of \(A\). Such a subalgebra \(X\) is a left quantum space of \(A\) with left coaction given by the restriction of the comultiplication. In the paper left covariant first order differential calculi on the Hopf algebra \(A\) are constructed and the corresponding induced calculi on the left quantum space \(X\) are described. The main tool for these constructions are the \(L\)-functionals associated to the corepresentation \(u\). The results are applied to the quantum homogeneous space \(GL_q(N)/GL_q(N-1)\).
