In this paper the authors have studied a newly defined modification \(V_{n}\) of the well known Baskakov operators. They have considered the iterative combinations due to \textit{C. Micchelli} [J. Approximation Theory 8, 1--18 (1973; Zbl 0258.41012)], to improve the order of approximation for the sequence \(V_{n}\) and established a Voronovskaya type asymptotic formula and an error estimation in terms of higher order modulus of continuity. In the end the authors have mentioned in a remark that for the operators \(V_{n}\), the rate of convergence for functions of bounded variation, for which the one sided limits \(f(x+)\) and \(f(x-)\) exist, are not analogous to the result studied by \textit{V. Gupta} [Comput. Math. Appl. 45 (12), 1895--1904 (2003; Zbl 1062.41023)].
