This paper focuses on the dynamic modeling of nonlinear electrical systems from an energy-based perspective. It describes the relationships between the classical Brayton-Moser (MB) equations and port-Hamiltonian (PH) system models for topologically complete RLC circuits with and without controllable switches. The authors show that the BM and PH systems are precise duals, and consequently offer advantages for controller design. Control designs for the PH model cannot be directly implemented since that would require observation of flux and charges, which are not directly available using standard sensors. The BM models require only observation of currents and voltages. The duality between PH and BM systems allows one to pull back PH designs to the space of currents and voltages. Several examples are provided to illustrate the duality between the two frameworks.
