Here \(L^ 2\) is the usual Lebesgue space on the torus \(T^ n\), \(n>1\), with usual multivariable notations. \(T^ n\) is the product of \(n\) unit circles in \(C\). A closed subspace \(M\subset L^ 2\) is invariant if \(z_ j M\subset M\) for all \(1\leq j\leq n\). Let \(\Sigma_ m\) denote the closed linear span of the \(z^ \alpha M\) with \(|\alpha|=\alpha_ 1+\dots+\alpha_ n=m\), \(m=1,2,\dots\) and put \(S_{m-1}=\Sigma_{m-1}\ominus\Sigma_ m\), so that \(M=S_ \infty\oplus S_ 0\oplus S_ 1\oplus\dots\) ad inf., where \(S_ \infty=\cap\Sigma_ m\). When \(n=1\), this is the Wold decomposition into innovation spaces of prediction theory. If \(z_ j S_ m\subset S_{m+1}\), \(\forall j\), then \(M\) is said to admit homogeneous decomposition. If also \(S_ \infty=(0)\), \(M\) is called a homogeneous invariant (h.i.) subspace. The main result of this paper is the characterization of h.i. \(M\) as those of the form \(M=qH_ S\), where \(H_ S\) is the invariant subspace generated by \(S\), \(S\) is a subspace of the closed linear span of \(\{z^ \alpha\), \(\alpha_ 1+\dots+\alpha_ n=0\}\) and \(q\) is a function of absolute value 1. If \(n=2\), a NASC is given in order that homogeneous decomposition coincide with Wold decomposition with respect to \(z_ 1\).
