The main theorem of this paper states that, for any infinite factor M on a separable Hilbert space H, there exist a simple injective subfactor \(R\subset M\), where simple means \[ R\vee JRJ=B(H) \] with J any modular conjugation of M. A simple subfactor R has the poperty that it determines the isomorphisms of M. The theorem is achieved by developping a study of the joint modular theory of an inclusion of von Neumann algebras.
