Let \(\varphi (\zeta)=\sum_{k=-\infty}^{+\infty} \varphi_k\zeta^k=\exp V(\zeta)\) and \(V(\zeta)=V^+(\zeta)+V^-(\zeta), V^\ast(\zeta)=V^+(\zeta)-V^-(\zeta)\), where \(V^\pm (\zeta)=\sum_{k=1}^\infty v_k^\pm\zeta^{\pm k}\). It is proved a general formula expressing the Toeplitz determinant \(D_n(\varphi)=\det((\varphi_{i-j})_{i,j=1}^n)\) as a Fredholm determinant of the operator \(I-\mathcal K\) acting in \(\ell_2(\{n,n+1,\dots \})\). The main result is the following. The identity \(D_n(\varphi)=Z\det (I-{\mathcal K})_{\ell_2(\{n,n+1,\dots \})}\) holds. Here \(\mathcal K\) admits an integral representation in terms of unitial symbol \(\varphi\) or original Toeplitz matrix. The kernel \(\mathcal K\) may be define by the following generating function \(\sum_{i,j\in Z}\zeta^i\eta^{-j}{\mathcal K}(i,j)=\frac{\eta\exp(V^\ast(\zeta)-V^\ast(\eta))}{\zeta-\eta}\), \(|\zeta|>|\eta|.\) Some examples of such kernels which can be expressed in terms of special function are also given. Basing on this authors result \textit{E. Basor} and \textit{H. Widom} [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 37, No. 4, 397-401 (2000; Zbl 0967.47020)] gave another proof of the mentioned identity including the case of block Toeplitz determinants.
