A method is presented for designing residual generators in fault diagnosis systems. For linear systems, a minimal polynomial basis approach is given having the following features: i) all possible residual generators can be obtained, ii) explicit solutions are given with minimal order, and iii) numerical tools are available. A numerical illustration is given.
