Summarizing a series of works by Barbasch, Ma, and the two authors, this article illustrates how to construct \emph{all} the special unipotent representations (in the sense of Arthur, Barbasch and Vogan) for real classical Lie groups via iterated theta lifts (initiated by Howe) and parabolic inductions. By using algebraic, analytic and geometric methods, they are able to show that the constructed representations are irreducible, unitarizable. Moreover, the number of such representations can be counted so that the special unipotent representations are shown to be exhausted. This contributes significantly to the nilpotent step of the quantization problem as well as to the unitary dual problem of real reductive Lie groups. The orbit method, which was initiated by Krillov and extended by Kostant, is deeply appreciated in this article. For the entire collection see [Zbl 07816358].
