The authors investigate the behavior of a second order operator \(L\) defined on a compact manifold \(P\) with corners. It is a generalization of the Kimura diffusion operator \begin{align*} &L_{\mathrm{Kim}} = \sum_{1\le i,j\le N}x_i(\delta_{ij}-x_j)\partial_{x_i}\partial_{x_j}+\sum_{1\le i\le N}b_i(x)\partial_{x_i},\ x\in \Sigma_N\subset \mathbb{R}^N,\\ &\Sigma_N=\{(x=1,...,x_N):0\le x_i,\,i=1,...,N;\ x_1+...+x_n\le 1\}. \end{align*} It is shown that the \(C^0(P)\)-graph closure of \(L\) acting on \(C^2(P)\) has always a compact resolvent. The main part of the paper concentrates on the one-dimensional case. For \(P=[0,1]\) the gradient estimate \(\|\partial_x f\|_{C^0([0,1])}\le \|Lf\|_{C^0([0,1])}\) is established.
