The authors study the operator relations ``equivalence after extension'', ``equivalence after one-sided extension'' and ``Schur coupling'', and their interconnections. As a main result, it is proved that equivalence after extension implies equivalence after one-sided extension (and that this implies Schur coupling), for inessential Banach space operators.
