The concept of unbounded convergence in vector lattices is extensively analyzed. Given a convergence \(\sigma\) on a vector lattice, a net \((x_{\alpha})\) is said to \textit{unbounded \(\sigma\)-converge} to \(x\) if \(|x-x_{\alpha}|\wedge u\) \(\sigma\)-converges to zero for every positive \(u\) in the vector lattice. \(\sigma\) may for example be order convergence. To cite one result, among a number of equivalent conditions, it is shown that a topology \(\tau\) on a vector lattice is pre-Lebesgue (i.e., \(0\le x_n \uparrow x\) implies \(\tau\)-Cauchy) if and only if every disjoint sequence unbounded \(\tau\)-converges to zero. The development of these concepts also provides simpler proofs of known results as well as their generalizations. For example, it is established that unbounded order convergence agrees with the convergence of a locally convex-solid topology on \(X\) if and only \(X\) is atomic. Then the known result that \(X\) is atomic if and only it is a regular sublattice of the product \(\mathbb R^A\) is a direct corollary. A variety of other applications of unbounded convergence are considered including minimal topologies and interesting relationships to universal completions.
