Let \(G\) be a finite group. For a character \(\chi\) of \(G\), the authors consider the codegree of \(\chi\), which is defined as \(\chi^c (1)=|G: \operatorname{ker} \chi|/ \chi(1)\). If \(\chi\) is irreducible, then \(\chi^c(1)\) is certainly an integer divisor of \(|G/ \operatorname{ker} \chi|\). The set of codegrees of the irreducible characters of a group has been previously studied by several authors. For instance, \textit{S. M. Gagola jun.} and \textit{M. L. Lewis} proved that \(G\) is nilpotent if and only if \(\chi(1)\) divides \(\chi^c(1)\) for every \(\chi\in \mathrm{Irr}(G)\) [Commun. Algebra 27, No. 3, 1053--1056 (1999; Zbl 0929.20010)]. The second author of the paper under review also obtained a \(p\)-local version for an odd prime \(p\) by showing that \(G\) has a normal Sylow \(p\)-subgroup if and only if \(\chi(1)_p < \chi^c(1)_p\) for every \(\chi\in \mathrm{Irr}(G)\) with \(p\) dividing \(\chi(1)\) [Isr. J. Math. 190, 401--412 (2012; Zbl 1264.20011)]. In this paper, an opposite situation is considered: \(\gcd (\chi(1), \chi^c(1))=1\) for all \(\chi\in \text{Irr}(G)\). The structure of such groups is determined in two main theorems corresponding to two cases, the solvable and the nonsolvable case. The proofs appeal, among others, to results on those groups \(G\) all irreducible character degrees of which are Hall numbers with respect to \(G\) [\textit{D. Liang} et al., J. Algebra 307, No. 2, 695--703 (2007; Zbl 1114.20008)].
