In the article under review, the author studies moduli stacks of curves with nonspecial divisors and their relation to the Sato Grassmannian via a theory of Krichever maps. In particular, given positive integers \(g\) and \(n\), if \[ X(g,n) := \{ \mathbf{a} = (a_1,\dots,a_n) \in \mathbb{Z}^n_{\geq 0} : a_1 + \hdots + a_n = g \}, \] then each \(\mathbf{a} \in X(g,n)\) determines a moduli stack \(\mathcal{U}^{ns}_{g,n}(\mathbf{a})\) of reduced curves \(C\) with arithmetic genus \(g\) and smooth marked points \(p_1,\hdots,p_n \in C\) with the property that the line bundle \(\mathcal{O}_C(p_1+\hdots+p_n)\) is ample and satisfies the condition that \(h^1(\mathcal{O}_C(a_1 p_1 + \hdots + a_n p_n)) = 0\). Further, by adding a choice of nonzero tangent vector at each marked point, the author constructs a \(\mathbb{G}_m^n\)-torsor \(\widetilde{\mathcal{U}}_{g,n}^{ns}(\mathbf{a}) \rightarrow \mathcal{U}^{ns}_{g,n}(\mathbf{a})\) and the author's main results pertain to these stacks \(\widetilde{\mathcal{U}}_{g,n}^{ns}(\mathbf{a})\). For instance, the author first shows that, by working over \(\mathbb{Z}[1/N]\), for \(N \gg 0\) depending on \(\mathbf{a} \in X(g,n)\), the stack \(\widetilde{\mathcal{U}}^{ns}_{g,n}(\mathbf{a})\) is an affine scheme of finite type equipped with a \(\mathbb{G}^n_m\)-action corresponding to rescaling of the tangent vectors at each of the marked points. The author then works over \(\mathbb{Q}\) and proceeds to obtain a number of additional results. For example, the author constructs Krichever maps with target space the Sato Grassmannian and then uses these maps to relate the stacks \(\widetilde{\mathcal{U}}^{ns}_{g,n}(\mathbf{a})\) to cells of the Sato Grassmannian. Further, the author studies, for each \(\chi \in \mathbb{Z}^n\), the nature of the GIT quotients \(\widetilde{\mathcal{U}}_{g,n}^{ns}(\mathbf{a}) /\!/_ \chi \mathbb{G}_m^n\). Finally, the author considers, for each gap sequence \(1 = \ell_1 < \hdots < \ell_g\), moduli stacks \(\widetilde{U}_{g,1}[\ell_1,\dots,\ell_g]\) of irreducible pointed curves \((C,p)\) of arithmetic genus \(g\) with a choice of a nonzero tangent vector at \(p\) and having a given Weierstrass gap sequence \(1 = \ell_1 < \hdots < \ell_g\) at \(p\). In this direction, the author shows that the stacks \(\widetilde{U}_{g,1}[\ell_1,\dots,\ell_g]\) are affine schemes of finite type over \(\mathbb{Q}\) and, additionally, the author constructs and studies a Krichever map for these schemes as well.
