Let \(C\) be a braided category. A (braided) weak Hopf bialgebra in \(C\) is an associative algebra and coassociative coalgebra in which the comultiplication is not necessarily an algebra map (in \(C\)). A weak Hopf algebra is a weak bialgebra together with a special endomorphism that serves as an antipode. Loosely speaking, a weak Hopf algebra is a Hopf algebra in which the comultiplication fails to be an algebra map. In these terms, a weak Hopf quasigroup \(H\) is a non-associative (braided) weak Hopf algebra; in particular, it is equipped with an antipode \(\lambda_H: H\to H\). In this article, the authors show that the existence of this morphism \(\lambda\) is equivalent to the bijectivity of certain internal morphisms of \(H\). A similar characterization is obtained for Weak Hopf coquasigroups (which are defined by reversing arrows in the definition of weak Hopf quasigroups), by dualizing.
