The authors consider the following biharmonic equation \[ \Delta^2 u= u^p, \] with \[ \frac{n}{n-4} < p < \frac{n+4}{n-4}, \] in two cases: in the whole of \(\mathbb R^n\), where they study existence and behavior of radial solutions, and in smooth open sets \(\Omega\) of \(\mathbb R^n\), with Navier boundary conditions (i.e., \(u=\Delta u=0\) on \(\partial\Omega\)), where they study solutions with prescribed sets of singularities. Concerning entire solutions, they characterize completely the radial ones in terms of their asymptotic behavior as \(x\to\infty\), using the following more general problem \[ \Delta^2 u=|x|^\alpha u^p, \] for \(n\geq5\), \(\alpha>-4\), and \(p>\frac{n+4+2\alpha}{n-4}\). In this case they also discuss the dependence upon the value attained at the origin. Using the results for entire solutions, the authors prove that, for the problem in smooth open sets, for any given closed set of singularities there are two distinct sequences of solutions: the former converging to zero, the latter converging to a smooth solution, both convergence being in \(L^q(\Omega)\) for \(q<\frac{n(p-1)}4\). Finally, for \(n\geq 13\), they prove that the equation \[ \Delta^2 u= u^{\frac{n+4}{n-4}} \] admits a solution in \(L^{\frac{n+4}{n-4}}(\mathbb R^n,d\mu)\) with \(d\mu=(1+|x|^2)^{-\frac{n-4}{2}}\) such that its singular set is the whole of \(\mathbb R^n\). | |||
