This paper is organized as follows: In Section 2, the stabilization mechanisms identified by \textit{B. Fiedler}, \textit{V. Flunkert}, \textit{M. Georgi}, \textit{P. Hövel} and \textit{E. Schöll} [in: H. G. Schuster (ed.), Reviews of nonlinear dynamics and complexity. Vol. 1. Weinheim: Wiley-VCH. 53--68 (2008; Zbl 1160.37429)] for the Hopf normal form example are reviewed and the generalized problem is formulated. Section 3 contains the key results: The restrictions on \(\beta\) for effective stabilization are determined; also, the degenerate bifurcation that acts as an organizing center for the control problem is identified and analyzed. Section 4 presents a rigorous center manifold reduction for the delay differential equation with certain details relegated to an appendix. In Section 5, the findings are summarized and some open questions and future directions of research are discussed. This analysis reveals two qualitatively distinct cases when the degenerate bifurcation is unfolded in a two-parameter plane. In each case, the Pyragas-type feedback successfully stabilizes the branch of the small-amplitude of an unstable periodic orbit in a neighborhood of the original bifurcation point, provided that the feedback phase angle satsifies a certain restriction. | |||
