Hermitian quadratic matrix polynomials of the form \(\mathbb{L}(\lambda)=L\lambda^2+L_1\lambda+L_0\), with Hermitian coefficients and a nonsingular leading coefficient, are considered. Matrix polynomials of this type arise in the quadratic eigenvalue problem. Factorizing the polynomial in the form \(\mathbb{L}(\lambda)=(I\lambda-S)L(I\lambda-A)\), the main goal is to investigate the following inverse problem: given the matrix \(A\) and a non singular leading coefficient \(L\), characterize the class of matrices \(S\) for which \(\mathbb{L}(\lambda)\) is Hermitian. The authors aim to generalize some results stated previously for the more restrictive case of polynomials with positive definite leading coefficients. Other important issues such as the stability of the factorization, the restriction to real and symmetric coefficients are discussed and some numerical examples to illustrate the theoretical developments are provided.
