The authors describe a natural setting for studying a frequently encountered type of evolution of loops with respect to complex time. This evolution is studied on the language of holomorphic doughnuts with an emphasis on the existence problem and geometric aspects. After presenting a general setting for pseudoholomorphic curves in an almost complex manifold, the authors apply this scheme to pseudoholomorphic functions with values in the space of unparametrized transverse loops in a Cauchy-Riemann manifold. Next, they present the explicit construction of a natural almost complex structure on the space of transverse loops in a \(CR\)-manifold. They show that a general existence theorem for holomorphic doughnuts in \(CR\)-manifolds can be derived from the results in [\textit{J. Lempert}, J. Differ. Geom. 38, 519--543 (1993; Zbl 0792.58008)]. They also formulate similar results for loop groups and Riemannian \(3\)-folds. Many nontrivial examples of holomorphic doughnuts in \(S^3\) can be obtained from isolated singularities of holomorphic functions of two variables.
