The authors describe a computational methodology for coupling solutions of physical processes over non-matching grids defined on independent subdomains, that are partitions of a global 3D domain. The numerical solution on the global domain is computed by appropriately piecing the local solutions from each subdomain. The authors discuss the mixed method formulation for the technique applied to a model problem and derive an error estimate for the finite element solution. The numerical implementation of the technique suggests that the method is robust and reliable.
